Enterprises (SMEs)

The European Seas and Oceans are central to the European economy with great potential for innovation, economic growth and job creation. The €80 billion Horizon 2020 for research and innovation is part of the drive to create new growth and jobs in Europe. Horizon 2020 tackles societal challenges by helping to bridge the gap between research and the market by, for example, helping innovative enterprise to develop their technological breakthroughs into viable products with real commercial potential. This market-driven approach includes creating partnerships with the private sector and member states to bring together the resources needed.

BONUS responds to the EU's growth and jobs strategy by implementing many principles of the Horizon 2020. BONUS brings science and innovation close to one another, in particular through the innovation calls open for SMEs and researchers: Innovations in the Baltic Sea region are all about people's ability to cooperate and willingness to create business based on their knowledge and research results.

The first BONUS innovation call in 2012 was announced in cooperation with BSR Stars, a flagship project of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. BSR Stars aims to strengthen the competitiveness and economic growth in the region. The second BONUS innovation call was announced in 2015.

Through the BONUS innovation calls, companies get an opportunity to participate and develop their business ideas together with researchers and possibly test them too together with customers. Typically an industrial partner brings into the consortium competence from the application domain and an insight from the market's and customers' needs whereas the participating research organisations ensure the leading edge scientific level of the project. Currently there are ca. 15 SMEs participating in 13 ongoing projects. In the future call more SME's are invited to lead and participate in the innovations projects.
