Policy framework analysis in the fields relevant to the BONUS programme launched

Since the formulation of the BONUS strategic research agenda 2011-2017, the framework of relevant policies have been evolving rapidly. Revisiting the landscape of the relevant policies is a necessary step in the process of updating the BONUS strategic research agenda. The quick advances made are clearly visible in particular on the regional Baltic Sea and the European levels.

Among the most important policies in terms of their relevance to the BONUS programme is the HELCOM’s Baltic Sea Action Plan which has progressed in developing the core indicators and creating assessment tools for environmental quality. Equally importantly, the European Commission has refined the criteria and methodological standards for identifying the good environmental status within the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive and further elaborated on the main principles of the new Common Fisheries Policy.
