BONUS in the European Parliament, Brussels, 16 May 2018, 13:30-16:00 hosted by MEP Miapetra Kumpula-Natri

This event will build on the overriding conclusion of the recent, independent final evaluation of BONUS (Art 185) published by the European Commission in October 2017. It states BONUS to have been in many ways a great success and that it remains a relevant response to the environmental and policy issues identified in the Baltic Sea region and to the difficulty of joint programming from the national level. Now BONUS also plans the future BONUS 2 programme with broadened scope of a joint Baltic Sea and the North Sea research and innovation programme.

The first panel of the event will present results of the BONUS’s policy-driven research and development programme from major projects that are nearing completion and reach out through their results areas and policies far beyond the regional sea. BONUS contributes towards joint programming of European research and innovation and the international research cooperation and supports the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, EU Blue Growth Agenda, the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan as well as other coastal and marine environmental policies.

The second panel of the event will discuss the BONUS continuation plans of forming a joint northern European research and innovation programme of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea based on the BONUS model. The overarching objective of this proposed new programme is to elevate the northern European region’s research and innovation capacity to a level necessary to achieve a decisive boost in the development of a sustainable marine and maritime economy. Participating partners preparing the new phase come from Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the UK. Also key strategic partners such as HELCOM, OSPAR, ICES and JPI Oceans are part of the preparations.

This event will be co-organised with the Office of the Member of the Parliament Ms. Miapetra Kumpula-Natri from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, member of ITRE Committee, Vice-Chair of Intergroup CCBSD and Chair of informal intergroup for the Baltic Sea region. Also other Members of the Parliament as well as invited guests from the Commission and elsewhere will provide input and commentary to the discussions.

Further updates and a DRAFT agenda will be made available soon.
