Copyright Dzitra Upmace70 country representatives from institutions dealing with marine, maritime and socio-economic issues, funders and scientific community of nine Baltic Sea countries confirmed this week the broad themes of the joint Baltic Sea research programme BONUS for the coming years.

The research themes provide the basis for the BONUS calls for multi-disciplinary and transnational projects. The first call will open late 2011 followed by further calls in the coming years to generate new knowledge in support of decision-making in the Baltic Sea region.

The broad themes now formulated relate to the multifaceted challenges in linking the Baltic Sea with its coast and catchment area, the complexity of the Baltic Sea ecosystem structure and functioning; observation and data management tools and methodologies for future marine information needs; sustainable use of coastal and marine goods and services of the Baltic Sea; and the capabilities of the society to respond to the current and future challenges directed to the Baltic Sea region.

The BONUS Strategic Research Agenda will be formulated around the themes confirmed in Latvia and finalised and published during the summer to be available well in time for the first call that is to open in late 2011.
