COMING EVENTS

16-22.8.2010        Multidisciplinary course on Risk governance in the Baltic Sea, Stockholm, Sweden

Application deadline EXTENDED until 15 May 2010!

The BONUS+ projects RISKGOV and PROBALT will jointly give a PhD course on Risk governance, especially focusing the Baltic Sea. This course is open to all PhD candidates interested in multidisciplinary environmental science. From an ecosystem approach to management perspective, environmental risks such as those emanating from eutrophication, hazardous chemicals, shipping, loss of biodiversity and over-fishing will be analyzed and discussed. The course will comprise two weeks of preparatory reading at home followed by an intensive week with lectures, seminars and field excursions at the Askö Marine Laboratory in the Stockholm archipelago. Finally, two weeks at home will be devoted to writing a report from the week at Askö. For more detailed information and application, please visit the RISKGOV homepage www.sh.se/riskgov.

15-23.9.2010        Workshop on Stable Isotopes, Stockholm

BONUS+ project AMBER (Assessment and Modelling Baltic Ecosystem Response) invites PhD students from all around the Baltic to the summer school on Stable isotope analysis in biogeochemistry with focus on the Baltic Sea and its catchment, Stockholm, 15-23 September 2010. Workshop will feature Prof. Brian Fry - author of "Stable Isotope Ecology" and several other  renowned authorities in the field. More details at www.io-warnemuende.de/stable-isotope-analysis.html.

12.10.2010            Kick-off Conference of BONUS Forum, Tallinn

BONUS EEIG will establish BONUS Forum, consisting of representatives of governmental institutions dealing with marine and maritime issues under various sector Ministries. The Forum is established to discuss the Programme’s potential and emerging research needs considered from the decision-making perspective. The Forum will also be a tool for advancing the Pan-Baltic integration of research which is done within the governmental sectors with the project-based science initiatives, and involves the use and planning of joint infrastructures. In this context, BONUS EEIG will organize a Kick-Off Conference on 12 October 2010 in Tallinn, on the day before the 1st EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region Stakeholder Event.

13.10.2010          Climate Modelling School, Norrköping, Sweden

The workshop  will focus on the tools, assumptions, results and uncertainties of state‐of‐the‐art climate modelling on global and regional scales. Lecturers include Markus Meier and Markku Rummukainen, SMHI and Eduardo Zorita, GKSS. More information at www.baltex-research.eu/ecosupport

14.10.2010           Workshop on Uncertainties of scenario simulations at SMHI, Norrköping, Sweden

The Workshop is organized by the BONUS+ projects ECOSUPPORT and IBAM and will be of interest for scientists concerned with modelling of climate scenarios, nutrient load and atmospheric deposition scenarios, fishery scenarios, risk management, etc. with focus on the Baltic Sea Region. Posters, presentations and discussions will topic on methods to estimate uncertainties of scenario simulations and possibilities to combine Bayesian risk analysis and climate change ensemble modelling. Invited speakers are Dr Samu Mäntyniemi and Dr Jouni Räisänen from University of Helsinki. Abstracts are welcome until 15 September 2010.

15-18.10.2010      The Third International Symposium on Research and Management of Eutrophication in Coastal Ecosystems (EUTRO 2010),  Nyborg, Denmark

EUTRO 2010 aims to support better communication and understanding between scientists and managers. The themes for EUTRO 2010 will be: (1) the most recent scientific results in relation to specific eutrophication issues, e.g.: definition(s) and causes, nutrient loads, cycling and limitation, reference conditions, primary effects and secondary effects, trend reversal (oligotrophication), links to other pressures (climate change and top/down control), (2) monitoring and modelling of coastal eutrophication, (3) socio-economy and valuation of eutrophication, and (4) adaptive and knowledge-based nutrient management strategies. You can read more about EUTRO 2010 and sign up for more information at www.EUTRO2010.dhi.dk.
